My work is to hold space for parents as they welcome a new child. When that baby has brown skin these parents know from the first day that their child isn’t safe in this country.
They love, teach, and protect their child with the ceaseless fear that their precious baby will be taken from them. By health conditions that are ignored by their medical providers. By racist cops. By white supremacist vigilantes. By gun violence.
The work of destroying the system that makes these parents’ fears completely reasonable is our work. It is birthwork.
It is time for the racist foundation of American society to crumble, and yes, just like birth, it will be messy, it will be uncomfortable, and we can’t know how it will go, but just like birth, it is necessary, it is inevitable, and we must welcome it.
